WOW - we moved into our new beautiful Van Hise Library! The students are enjoying more space, the comfortable soft seating, and our using our new computers. My favorite features include more white board space, more room to house books (and the beautiful new bookcases), and the new circulation desk with a "real" return slot:) It's so wonderful to see the excited looks on all the students' faces as they enter, read and learn in our new space. I am so grateful to be part of our amazing VHE community!
Many thanks to the PTO for all of your help including purchasing our new Chrome Book computers. Special shout out to many 4th and 5th grade students (and parents) who came to help on moving day - we couldn't have done this without your help: Chandini (and sister Malini), Annelise, Alex, Richard, Nolan, Wendy, Clive (and brother Axel), Shelby, Millian, Amira, and Afan! Many thanks also to our wonderful K-2 Reach teacher Emma, our great Custodial Crew Russ and Carol, and to our amazing Technology Technician Kris. If you haven't seen it yet, come on in and take a peek!
FYI - We will stop checking out books from the Van Hise library at the end of May in order to make sure we collect books on time for the end of the school year. Students will continue reading in the library. If you find any VHE books at home over the summer remember to return them in the fall. Start looking for your overdue books now please!
In addition to getting acclimated to and relishing the magnificent new LMC; this month second graders will enjoy the books, The Day the Crayons Quit and The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt. Using details from the story, students will consider each crayon's point of view, and then choose a crayon color that they feel "deserves their support." Later using computer graphic tools students will create a document that promotes the color's importance. Near the end of the month students will have the opportunity to share their work with their classmates and give persuasive opinions as to why their color choice deserves appreciation and support. We will also learn how to properly care for and use our new Chrome Books!
In addition to getting acclimated to and relishing the magnificent new LMC; this month first graders will finish the last chapters of Snot Stew by Bill Wallace. Near the end of the month students will give their personal opinion and rational in regards to why they would or would not recommend this book and then share their thoughts with their peers. We will also learn how to properly care for and use our new Chrome Books!
In addition to getting acclimated to and relishing the magnificent new LMC; this month kindergarten students will learn how to properly care for and use our new Chrome Books!
We will also listen to a variety of fiction/non-fiction book pairings and complete activities that compare and contrast the selections. For one of the parings students will listen to Hot Rod Hamster by Cynthia Lord and the non-fiction selection, I Drive a Street Sweeper by Sara Bridge. They will then use a software program in our library portal to "Create a Car" and drive it!
