Understanding our children:
A practical session on sensory regulation
Tuesday, February 7, 7-8:30 pm
Van Hise Elementary Cafeteria
Child Care Provided (Gym)

Much of what we learn as children comes to us through our senses. But our sensory experience includes far more than just taste, touch, sight, hearing and smell. This session will introduce parents and teachers to seven sensory systems and sensoryregulation, identifying some of the common challenges children face as they rely on sensory integration to navigate physical space and social relationships.

Learn basic strategies to support children, and understand possible “red flags” for sensory integration challenges. You will also get some helpful tips about how to understand and talk with your children about the sometimes confusing behaviors of other people who may experience significant challenges integrating their sensory experiences.

Led by an occupational therapist from Children’s Therapy Network, this session will prove useful to parents, teachers, SEAs, and anyone who spends a lot of time with children.

Why this topic? The incidence of sensory integration dysfunction in children continues to rise. In the Spring 2011 PTO survey, more than two-thirds of parents who responded said they would be likely to attend a session on this topic.

Hope to see you there.

The PTO meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 10 is cancelled. The February PTO meeting will be a general meeting with an occupational therapist from the Children’s Therapy Network coming to talk about sensory regulation and integration.

Van Hise PTO Board Meeting
Tuesday, September 9, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 7:05pm. In attendance were the majority of board members, Peg Keeler,  teachers Theresa Miller and Sara Clark, and a number of other guests and visitors.

Approval of Last Month’s Meeting Minutes
The minutes of the August meeting were approved by unanimous consent. Any changes that might be noted should be brought to the attention of the board.

Treasurer’s Report
Tricia Kehoe reported that the funds on hand were the same as at the last meeting. The biggest fundraiser, Innisbrook wrapping paper sale, is upcoming and will add considerably to the financial reserves. There was some concern expressed about the lack of candy for sale this year as a result of the district wellness policy. In the past this accounted for about half of the Innisbrook revenues.

Principal’s Report
Peg Keeler asked a question about the appropriate procedure to follow for securing funds for the kindergarten teachers (she was informed that a grant proposal should be filled out and submitted) and then provided a report on the situation regarding the new allocation and classroom to the board.
